What did I learn?
I’ve had a couple of good over-the-horizon career conversations with people in the last week. It can be easy to fall lazily into the groove of thinking that because people don’t bring this stuff up regularly in 1:1s, that they aren’t thinking about it. Of course, they are.
Along with the serendipitous reappearance (thanks Dom) of this article on essential meetings to have with your people as a manager this has helped me realise I need to double down and be more explicit about scheduling and facilitating deeper career conversations.
What did I change?
It was a three-day week so not a lot, but I’m being kind to myself about it.
How did I feel?
It’s been a short few days, but tiring; having my parents visit has been really lovely but brought with it a very heavy emotional overhead.
I’m still as freshly optimistic and enthusiastic about our new look design team as I was last week. More so in fact, as the newer faces are getting plenty of opportunities to show us all what they’re capable of.
What didn’t I get done?
Did a bit of thinking but didn’t make any tangible progress on V2 of the career progression framework.
